We are planning to take the train on a day trip from Rome to Naples on Trenitalia (and then go on to Pompeii) in a few weeks. We know the day we're going and that we need to take the 7:35 a.m. train to get there in time for our tour. So, I'd like to go ahead and reserve our tickets now. But, we don't know exactly which train we'll want to take back at the end of the day. So here is the question: If I purchase the return tickets using the economy fare (instead of super economy), would that allow us to change the return train (still same day, just maybe later)? I think it would, but I'm hoping someone out there can confirm. Thanks
Why don't you just buy the ticket from Rome to Naples now, using the super economy fare, and buy the return ticket when you decide, even when you get to Naples station, paying the full "base" fare?
Lisa,
As Chris mentioned in the previous reply, the most logical suggestion would be to buy the tickets to Naples at whatever discounts are available at the time, and buy the return tickets at Base fare when you arrive back at Napoli Centrale. You may also be able to return from Naples to Rome using Italo Treno but I haven't checked the schedules.
Although Economy tickets allow one change of date / time, a change fee is charged so you may not save much. In addition to that, changing the ticket will likely involve standing in a queue for an indeterminate length of time at the ticket office. After a long and probably hot day of touring, that would be NO fun for me.
You can change an Economy ticket paying the upgrade to Base fare, but you can change it only once and before the train leaves. That is to say, you cannot arrive at the station after your reserved train has left and change the ticket to a later one.
Thanks everyone. Based on your suggestions, I'll go ahead and buy the tickets to Naples now. As long as you all don't think we'll have issues buying tickets (availability) once we're there; we'll wait and do it then.
Lisa,
As I mentioned above, you could certainly buy one-way tickets TO Naples now, since you know the specific train you'll be taking. That might save you a few dollars. Buying tickets in Naples for the return trip shouldn't be a problem.
Thanks for the suggestions!
