I am planning a trip where I will be done in Florence and ready to leave early on a Thursday morning. My next scheduled stop is in Brig, Switzlerland, but I won't need to be there until around noon on Friday. I'd really love to make a quick stop to explore the Cinque Terre. Looking through train schedules, I figured I could take an early train from Florence to La Spezia, then La Spezia to Riomaggiore, arriving there aroung 10:00 a.m. After a day of wandering and enjoying the coast and trails, there's a train that leaves Riomaggiore around 6 pm and heads to Milan by way of Genova. I could spend the night in Milan, then catch the morning train from Milan to Brig. I tried finding ways to stay in Cinque Terre overnight, but there wasn't a train that would get me from there to Brig by noon, so had to break the journey in two parts.
Does this seem realistic? A waste of time? Good idea? Bad idea? I know I won't have enough time to see all 5 towns along the path, but I'd like to at least get a taste for the area.
Since I obviously don't want to carry my luggage along the footpath, is it possible to leave my bags at the train station in Riomaggiore while I explore?
Any good ideas for places along the path (from Riomaggiore to Vernazza- probably won't have time to make it all the way to Monterosso) to take a quick swim, as this is the only coastal stop in my itenerary and I'd love to get in the water!
Any suggestions are more than welcome! Thanks!
