Quick Daytrips from Rome

We're headed to Italy in March. Wanted some options for quick daytrips from Rome. We've debated Ostia Antica, ruled out Pompeii for another time (the thought of the long long day with my 12 year old doesn't sound like fun--we'll catch it another time).

Now, we're thinking about maybe getting a glimpse at another place. Any suggestions? Maybe Civita?

We're spending 4 nights in Rome, 2 in CT, and 3 in Venice.

Thank you!

I like Tivoli and gardens and fountains at Villa d'Este and I think the fountains would be especially attractively to a 12 year. About an hour outside of Rome. Great ride in the country side and especially the train ride. Go to RoninRome for very, very details directions for getting there and back.

Hi Liz - My best thought for a day trip would be about 60 miles south to Sperlonga - An absolutely beautiful seaside town that you would enjoy exploring.

When my children were the age of your son, Pompeii was one of their favorite places. They still go back, as adults. American Express at the Spanish Steps has bus tours you can take, which would be easy with children. We just went on our own. Show him the pictures on line and let him see if he would be interested. Lots of interesting history!!

If your 12 year old would enjoy Pompeii, he/she will enjoy Ostia Antica just as much and it's MUUUCH easier to get to.

You could also take the Eurostar to Florence and see the Uffizi, David and the best Duomo in Italy! You could be there by 10:00 and be back in Rome around 6:00 or 6:30. Enjoy!

I suggest Orvieto. It's very easy to get to from Rome & there is a variety of things to do there. The underground tour is really interesting & takes about an hour. You could also explore St. Patrick's Well or climb to the top of the tower for the views. The Duomo is also beautiful, especially when the sun illuminates the fascade. I think it's a relaxing day trip from Rome. Have a wonderful trip.
