I have a 2 full days extra in my itinerary. I will be in Milan and I will have a car. I love to go some pretty cute village/town from Milan. After that I need to head to lake Como. Any suggestions?
South of Milan, you could easily combine a visit to Parma or Modena with side trips to the pretty and historic little towns of Castell'Arquato, Vigoleno, and Fontanellato. The wonderful Certosa of Pavia would also be an easy detour en route.
I stayed in Milan for a few days last year as I knew people who lived there...when I did not see them, I took a day trip to Stresa on Lake Maggiore which I enjoyed a lot...it has a beautiful lakeside promenade walkway as well as a small ferry boat that takes you out to the Borromean islands. I loved them all, they were each a little different. I was able to eat outside on the smallest one as well as go from a swim (I always wear my bathing suit under a sun dress when I'm traveling around near any body of water in Italy in the summer!)...Isola Bella was amazingly beautiful. I would do it again if I were to return!
I also went to Parma for a night and I suppose you could combine it with Modena if you have a car....I stayed in Parma overnight as I signed up for a bike ride out into the countryside to a parmesan cheese factory...it was amazing to see how it is made....I enjoyed the whole experience as well.
