Questions on commuter train Porta San Paolo station to Ostia Antica

My husband and I plan to go to Ostia Antica by train from Roma San Paolo station. I know the train is part of the Metro system and uses Metro tix. RS describes getting to the train from the Piramide Metro stop and using your Metro tik to board. But we will be walking to the train station, not taking the Metro. Does anyone know how you validate your Metro tik to get on the train? Is there a turnstile to go thru or is there a validation machine on the train platform?

Also, anyone who has used this train: any comments on it? I assume for the return the Ostia Antica station has a validation machine on the platform. Correct?

Also, anyone know if you can still buy Metro tix at tobacco shops or will need to buy at a machine in a Metro station? We are low-tech people and will be buying paper tix, not using a smartphone.

Thanks

Thank you for the link. It has valuable info. It did appear that the author is discouraging using the train in favor of private transport for which I assume he is compensated. He made the train sound very unpleasant.

It appears the Roma Lido line is no longer operated by ATAC but by a company called COTRAL. However it seems they still use regular Metro tix.

If someone has recently used this train could you please comment on the experience?

Also, the author says the Ostia Antica entry tix at the site must be purchased with a credit card. Anybody know if this is accurate?

Thanks for any current info.
