Has anyone recently been to Venice/San Marco Square, and seen the restoration work on the bell tower? I'm curious to know if there is just a little scaffolding at the base of the tower; or if the restoration involves a bigger part of the square.
Here's a link to a live webcam of Piazza San Marco. It looks to the corener where the clock tower is but you can see a bit of the fencing for the campanile work.

I'll be there in about 3 weeks, I can check it out and let you know if that helps.
We were in Venice mid-March. At that time there was fencing around the bell tower that went almost half way into the large open area of the square and ran back alongside Florian's. I just looked at our photos and did not realize while there how large the fenced area was because the size and beauty of everything else must have distracted me from the look of the fencing. Things could have changed a lot in the month since then.
Thanks for the information. The bell tower restoration is taking up a larger portion of San Marco Square than I had imagined, and I see some work going on behind the Basilica as well. Just my luck - my European vacation photos always seem to include quite a bit of scaffolding.
Fortunately there's so much more to Venice than just the Piazza San Marco. Don't despair. Get a copy of "Eyewitness Travel Guides Venice & the Veneto" to see what I mean. It's loaded with photos and drawings of Venice including walking tours of all the various neighborhoods.
It's important to understand that on any given trip to Europe, many of the major sights will be under scaffolding. That's how they've stayed standing for so long. You have to expect this and plan to return.
Also, the Santa Maria della Salute church in Venice at least until recently has had its beautiful dome covered in scaffolding.
