Question: Tuscany Vineyards

In May 2008, I will be visiting a number of Tuscan towns, including Volterra, Siena, Montepulciano, Orvieto, etc. Might any of these areas have concentrations of vineyards near the roadside? This was the case in Burgundy, France, and I am hoping for similar sights during my Tuscany travels. Thanks for any help.

Lamont, we were in Siena Sept 2007 and visited wineries. The Montalcino and Montepulciano have many vineyards that have open tastings. Many you need an appointment. You just need to go on line and look for vineyards in those areas. I must warn you to be careful and only buy what you taste, we had a very expensive disaster where we tasted one vintage of Brunello and were told another year was just as good we bought it and it was crap. Do not trust Caparzo. Brunello di Montulcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano are both excellent wines. 2001 and 2005 are good years. Do not buy 2000, 2003. If you are there and visit a good Enoteca they will tell you a good year to buy. The CapAnna is one of the best Brunellos (2001). Vino Nobele di Montepulciano is as good and about half the price.
