Question re: which sestiere to stay in, in Venice

I'd love some input on this, I have a hotel booked in San Marco, the Rosa Salva hotel, however, I've read that there are more restaurant options in Cannaregio, are we better off staying in San Marco or Cannareggio? I've also heard that it's not a far walk to Cannareggio from the Rosa Salva hotel, I'd appreciate any advice.

Nothing is a long walk in Venice
If you are satisfied with the hotel you have booked, I’d just keep it.

Thank you Christine, I didn't find any hotels right in Cannareggio that jumped out at me, the Rosa Salva is well reviewed, and as long as we can find good non-tourist restaurants regardless, that's fine for me.

I just looked up your hotel, it gets great reviews and looks lovely. Very central location.
You are just steps from just about anything, keep it.

Perfect, thanks for the reinforcement of my decision, centrally located is key.

We stayed about 5 minutes from Rosa Salva. We were very pleased with the central location. We walked to restaurants easily avoiding the San Marco area crowds.

You can walk almost anywhere in Venice in 15 to 20 minutes from there. You will be surprised by how compact Venice is.

We stayed at Rosa Salva Hotel three weeks ago. I cannot say enough good things about them.
First the standard goods: room was smallish but quiet, breakfast was continental like all Italian hotels. Location is great. Yes, it puts you right in the middle of San Marco, but it is a 5 minute walk to Rialto, or St. Mark’s, 10 minute walk to the vaporetto stop to Murano/Burano. We started to walk to Cannaregio, about 20 minutes away, for dinner but by then I was getting sick and didn’t feel up to it.

Here why I love Hotel Rosa Salva: my sister-in-law lost her passport the first night we were there. (She’s very embarrassed by this story but I have to tell it.). The next morning she discovered it was missing. Thinking that the desk clerk did not return her passport to her when we checked in, she talked to desk clerk Antonio. A guest who was checking out and heading out the door heard her inquiry and said she had found a passport the previous night at E Rose Salva bakery next door and turned it in to the cashier. Antonio called the bakery and confirmed SIL’s passport had been turned into the Polizia. He sent us to the Carabinieri. They called around and could not find the passport. Back to the hotel. I started looking for trains for the next day to go to the US consulate in either Florence or Milan, both are only open 8:30-12:30. SIL was in tears. Antonio called the room to let us know he called around to the Polizia and found the passport. The Polizia would bring it to the hotel. Because they didn’t give him a time, he told us to go out and enjoy the sunshine (it rained most of May). We were gone only about 10 minutes when Antonio called to say the Polizia were there with her passport and we needed to hustle right back. He called once more while we’re on our way and sent an employee out to meet us. Thanks to Antonio, SIL got her passport back.

That thoughtful and caring customer service was so unexpected and appreciated. Although I haven’t finished unpacking from this trip, I’m starting to anticipate a trip in 2021 and can’t imagine staying anywhere else in Venice.

Wow horsewoofie, that's a great example in wonderful, caring, customer service, I'm glad you SIL got her passport back. I have a stay planned for 4 nights (3.5 days when you subtract train travel time, etc.), really looking forward to it!

Imbun,
She’s a very lucky lady. If it wasn’t for Antonio the outcome would have been very different.
Enjoy your stay at Rosa Salva.
