Question on tix for Ostia Antica for anyone who has visited this year

If you purchased tix at the site, was a credit card required ( no cash accepted)?

Also, if you went there on the Roma-Lido commuter train, how was your experience with it (any service problems etc)?

Thanks

We went last October. Since I used my Apple Watch to pay, I didn’t notice whether cash was or wasn’t accepted. We took the Lido train with no issues.

Hi Lizcat, I went last month and paid with a credit card. To be honest, I didn't notice if they accepted cash. Maybe check the website for more info. The train ran smoothly. It was a nice easy ride. Mostly locals. The site is pretty cool. We were there about three hours and packed a lunch. Enjoy!

We were there at the end of March this year. My daughter had booked a private guide, but we met inside, after we bought our tickets. Pretty sure we used a cc, since we were a party of 6.
It was Holy Week, and Rome was quite filled with tourists. The weather was fine. However, Ostia was not at all crowded.

Thanks for the replies. Good to know the train ran smoothly. It apparently is no longer managed by ATAC, the Roman transit agency but is now under regional jurisdiction. It apparently had a rough transition according to Trip Advisor posts from a year or so ago with late/cancelled trains reported. That is why I asked about it.

Jennifer: I did check the Ostia Antica official website. It doesn’t say anything about forms of payment accepted. Normally, I leave the credit card in the hotel safe but I will take it with me. The info about cash not being accepted came from a blog to which I was referred in a different thread on this forum. The blog had good details about getting to Ostia Antica but I don’t know if it was accurate about the credit card only issue.

Hi. Went there in February in a group of 8 friends. We bought tickets on the gate but can't remember if anyone used cash. The trains there and back worked fine although they were a bit shabby. To pay for the journey we used contactless cards on the Tap & Go terminals which worked well all over the transport system in Rome. We used the audio guide on the Rick Steve's App which was great. The cafe within the grounds was only so so. Overall definitely worth the visit. Have a great time.

Mel Kenyon: Did you use the tap and go card at the turnstile or to buy tix from a machine? If you used your tap and go at the turnstile, did you get a receipt or something to show on the train if they check?
