Question on Roma Pass

Myself, wife and 2 kids 5 and 10 are travelling to Rome. I was reading Rick Steves Rome 2015 and it mentioned that kids below 18 from any country ( we are US Citzens) are free for all the sites like the Roman Forum and all that. Is that true and also what about in the metro and bus, is that also free for kids below 18.

I just want to know if I should be getting 4 roma passes or 2 .

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

People under 18 are free for all state owned sites, of which the forum is one. Your kids will not get in free everywhere. They will get discounted prices at the Vatican museums if you decide to visit them and at non-state run sites in Rome.

I believe kids under 10 ride the metro for free, but they may have changed that to under 12. Hopefully someone else can answer that for certain.

You won't need four romapasses. If your oldest child needs metro tickets simply buy them as needed.

The ATAC website states that public transport is free for age 10 and under:

http://www.atac.roma.it/page.asp?p=229&i=14

"Bambini fino a 10 anni

I think you'll be fine but Italian websites are sometimes slow to release updates so as Donna said, it would be good to hear from a local.

I believe that means until they've had their 10th birthday so it would be under 10 travel for free. If it is under 10 for free it's not a big deal because single tickets are only 1.5 euros each. I wouldn't be too concerned about riding on public transportation. I think you'll find that you don't use it as much as you think you would.

Hmmm, the translation of the first line works out to "Children up to the completion of the tenth year of age…." which would indicate under age 11 and not under 10. Confirmation from a local would be helpful; where's Roberto?? :O)

My translation was "fulfillment" rather than "completion". Where are our locals and ex-pats?

Appears to be the case, Donna. More reading turned up a significant number of "under age 10" mentions versus the confusing ATAC language. Safest thing would be to just buy some tickets to have as needed.
