Question on Naples/Pompeii

Hi,

We are planning on doing Rick Steve's day trip to Naples while in Rome, but have several questions.

Is it better to buy the train tickets to Naples ahead of time (online)? or just get them at the train station that day? Rick Steve's day trip starts at 7:30am departing from Rome, if buy them that day, should we get to the train station maybe around 7:00am to buy them? What's the earliest train departure to Naples? we might just leave earlier if possible

Regarding the Archeological Museum in Naples, should we buy the tickets ahead of time? or once we get there? Rick Steve book doesn't mention if is better to buy there or online ahead of time and we just don't want to stand in line if that place is typically crowded with long lines.

Regarding hotels in Italy (Venice, Florence, Rome), do they usually provide towels? We just don't want to bring towels since they tend to be very bulky and we are traveling as light as possible.

Thanks!

If you buy tickets on-line you can take advantage of any discounts that could be available. But that locks you into a fixed schedule both ways - no change, no refund. Of course, the walk up fare the day of or before provides some flexibility. With the exception of Regionale train tickets, all other tickets are for a specific train at a specific time. You can get the train schedules and times at trenitalia.com

The museum in Naples is not very popular so there are seldom lines. Buy the tickets when you get there.

All hotels provide towels. It is wash cloths or face cloths that are hit or miss - mostly missed.

If you know the date you want to travel to Napoli, you can buy inexpensive super-economy tickets online. No changes or exchanges, so be sure of your plans. From Napoli Centrale, follow the signs for Metro and buy tickets. Take the metro to the Museo stop, then reverse the route to get back.

Edit: Frank and I were typing at the same time.
Use the pull-down calendar to make the reservation, and be sure you put in date/month/year.

Great museum!

If you can choose date and time --use the italiarail.com website. I just used it for 3 different trips and it was easy, quick and clear. I so appreciated it!

I'd also check TrenItalia so I could consider all the options for both schedule and price.

Trenitalia.com is the national rail company and site.

italiarail.com is a on-line travel agency selling rail tickets.

I prefer to use trenitalia.

... and italotreno.it/en is the private competing company that runs its own high speed trains on that route and whose discounted tickets are often cheaper than Trenitalia's.

Does italiarail re-sell e-tickets also for Regionale trains, now? Do they wait for trenitalia to decide the winter schedules before starting to sell Regionale trains tickets?

@Frank I got tickets from Trenitalia.com from Venice - Rome - Florence. I just wasn't sure about getting the tickets ahead of time from Rome - Naples - Rome. I guess those I am gonna buy them there and is a good idea to check the website for schedules!

I will also check italiarail.com and italotreno.it/en :)
