So in Rome, in the busy season, my 14yo gets free access to certain places like the Colosseum. If I purchase my ticket online, does he need to wait in the line? Or would I be better off just buying him an adult ticket so we don't have to wait?

Buy a "free ticket" online together with yours. You'll have to wait in the security line, but having purchased your tickets in advance on the Internet you will obviously skip the line to purchase tickets. There are no other lines.
