A post on The Forum dated 2013 - No Debit or Credit Cards At The Vatican grabbed my attention.
Is this still in place?
I used a credit card for a gift shop purchase a little over a year ago. You might want to stop by an ATM and get some cash just in case.
I think that post was from the time the Vatican had that issue with credit cards. It didn't have some type of legal authority or something along those lines in order to use cards. For a few months they were cash only. They fixed that issue more than a year ago so you'll be fine using both debit and credit cards.
Donna
I believe I read that they had so much credit card fraud while the last pope was there, so they stopped all kinds of credit/debit until they straightened out the Vatican City banking issue's. Hopefully now that is resolved. I will find out in a couple weeks.
Judy, you are correct. I remembered hearing/reading the same thing, so I just Googled. According to CNN articles on line, the Vatican stopped accepting the cards in January, 2012; however, a subsequent article in February, 2013, said they were back to accepting them.
So, likely there will be no problem, but always good to have some euros in one's pocket, just in case.
You'd think someone would think twice before doing credit card fraud at the Vatican. The consequences could be, well, out of this world.
