After battling the Trenitalia website for a week, I have decided to just purchase rail tickets after I arrive in Venice. The airport shuttle bus stops on the island at Piazzale Roma, but the Santa Lucia train station is on the opposite side of the Grand Canal. Does anyone know the status of the new Calatrava Bridge that connects these two sites? Thanks for any help.

I don't think the bridge will be finished until this summer, if it's on schedule, but if you're wondering how to get to the train station, there is another bridge not too far from Piazale Roma. otherwise, take a bus from the airport to Mestre train station

No need to go to the train station to purchase the train tickets unless you want to. You can buy them at any travel agent office.
