Hello,
Does anyone have experience visiting the ruins of Pompei while based in Sorrento? I believe you can take the train from Sorrento but is it possible to return by boat or vice-versa? I am leaving for Italy on May 27th having planned a wonderful 3 week trip for myself and my niece using the Rick Steves Guidebook and all the helpful information available on the website. This one detail I would like to check out with anyone who has experience in this area.

The Circumvesuvia is a private line train that goes from Naples to Sorrento, stopping near the Pompeii ancient site. So yes, you can access Pompeii that way either from Sorrento or Naples. If you want to include a boat, I am not aware of any stops on the coast near Pompeii for the several ferries, but consider a round trip time scenario: Sorrento to Pompeii by train, see Pompeii, back on the train to Naples, see the museum (where they took all the stuff from Pompeii) have some Pizza, then take the boat to Sorrento from Naples. You can reverse this as well.
