I've heard that it's a little time consuming & tricky to get to Villa d'Este from the train station. I would like to spend 1/2 day at Villa d'Este and will take the train from Rome. But, I am wondering if there are taxi's outside the train station that I could use to get to Villa d'Este. I am thinking that a taxi would be easy and fast but need to know if they will be readily available at the train station. Thank you for your input.
Sheron,
I've never taken that particular route, but suspect there will be Taxis available at the station (they're usually in place for arriving trains).
You might have a look at www.romanhomes.com/your_roman_vacation/daily-excursions-from-rome.htm for suggested methods on reaching Villa d'Este. In the "Tivoli" section, look for the bold lettering "Least Expensive".
Cheers!
Sheron, I took the metro then bus...all very easy. From the bus stop, it is a very short walk to the Villa. Half a day there will be wonderful, and make sure that you wear comfortable footware!! Villa Adriana is close by - take the local bus. Ps Ron-in-Rome's blog has a step by step, with photos, of how to get there which I saw after the event.
Sheron,
I don't know where you heard getting to Villa d'Este is hard, but it really is!! We left Rome airport and immediately set out for the gardens at Villa d'Este. No GPS at the time, but it was difficult. Getting out on the main autostrada to head into Assisi afterward was even more of a nightmare. I cannot even remember how we did it. Yes, take a taxi, bus whatever. By the way it was so worth the effort. Beautiful gardens and as suggested have good walking shoes. Happy travels.
