Wife and I are traveling in April, in and out of Rome, spending time in Rome and Lucca (we are staying with friends in Lucca). We bought round trip train tickets via Italo website. There is a change in Florence in each direction. The original plan was to do day trip to Florence from Lucca, but now we're thinking of spending a night or two in Florence on our way back to Rome. Wondering if we could still use our two legged ticket if we use the Lucca to Florence leg a day or two before the scheduled date on trenitalia regional train while still traveling from Florence to Rome on the reserved date since that leg has the reserved seat on It all train. Thank you in advance. Any thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.
It depends on the type of ticket. If it is a discount tickets mostly likely the terms are no change, no refund. Second, Regional tickets purchased on line are limited to a specific day and even a time window. So need to know type of tickets? From your limited description, the ticket to Rome would be OK since it is not a regional ticket.
I doubt it. If it was 2 separate tickets you might be able to modify the date and time of your tcket to Florence (in advance), perhaps with a surcharge. But a ticket to Florence is only around €10 pp. Why not just buy a new ticket at the station on the day you want to go? Then use your original ticket from Florence to Rome as intended.
Have a look at your ticket. The Lucca - Florence ticket will be a regional ticket, as Italo does not operate that route (but they do sell regional tickets). The ticket should have a reference code which you ought to be able to use to look it up in the Trenitalia App, where you normally can change the date of validity.
.Italo does not operate the leg from Florence to Lucca that's a regionale train run by Trenitalia. They will have no way of knowing if you used their ticket to get to the Florence train station from Lucca or came from your hotel. Just buy a local train ticket to Florence a couple of days early and then show up to use the Florence to Rome fast train part of the ticket. The Florence > Rome ticket will have a reserved car and seat and as long as you are in it for that section they won't care.
Both train companies have apps and I recommend downloading and using them. It should be clear in the app that .Italo only runs the fast trains between big cities and no local routes.
Hope that helps,

Thank you for the responses. If we decide to spend time in Florence we will look into the code idea to change the date, otherwise we will just buy new tickets for the Lucca to Florence trjp. Thank you.
