Question about transport to airport in Venice for disabled passenger

Hello. We will be in Venice this July for 4 nights. We arrive via train from Switzerland, arriving Santa Lucia on July 2. We depart July 6 from Marco Polo at 1:30 pm on a direct flight to Montreal.

We are traveling as a family of 5 (3 adults, 2 teens). My son is mildly disabled; he walks independently but is slow, uncoordinated, and tires easily. For longer distances or when we need to move quickly, we push him in a stroller. For this trip, we will have a jogger-type stroller for him (we will need the big wheels in Switzerland).

In Venice, we are staying in an apartment on the Zattere literally next door to the Chiesa dello Spirito Santo and its vaporetto stop.

My question pertains to transfers to/from our apartment when we arrive and depart. In general, when we are traveling with luggage (carryon and minimal personal pieces, but still a lot to juggle) I try to simplify our journey as much as possible because moving from one vehicle (boat, train, bus, car, whatever) to another is difficult for my son and takes us longer than average. I’m willing to spend more on private, direct transport for these transfers if that makes our arrival/departure easier.

It looks like when we arrive at the train station, the easiest solution will be the 5.1 vaporetto that will take us directly to the apartment. Easy enough.

However, when we depart for the airport, we would need to take a vaporetto to P. Roma and then transfer to the airport bus. I know the process is simple, but this would be a challenge for my son. Easier solution (for him) is to book a private water taxi directly to the airport.

Now here is my question (finally!): are we going to have trouble getting him into a water taxi? I’m assuming they pull up to the steps along the canal and there’s a bit of a hop/jump to get into the (possibly bobbing) boat. For those of you who have done this, is it easier than it sounds to me? We’ve gotten him on to docked boats before at home, but it’s quite a lot of lifting/helping on our part, and we’ve only ever done it with him strapped into a life jacket on calm water.

If this seems like it would be too risky, then we’ll plan on the vaporetto/bus to the airport.

Can you let me know your experiences with getting onto a water taxi and how easy that might be for someone with physical disabilities?

Whew, that got long! Thanks in advance for your input.

Yes, water taxi boarding g can be tricky as you must climb a bit to either get down into the boat or up out of the boat onto the dock.

I guess it’s too late to change your lodging to the area right at Santa Lucia station?

We were in Venice two years ago. Here is a link that shows which vaporetto lines accommodate a wheelchair. I would think the stroller for your son will be accommodated just like the wheelchair. The 5.1 line is on that list. https://www.visit-venice-italy.com/transport-wheelchair-venice-water-bus.html

Our hotel was on its own island and had its own water shuttle. My husband is blind and uses a guide dog. When the tide was high and the water was rough, it was challenging getting on the shuttle as the gangplank was narrow and moving. In that respect I think you will have easier access with the vaporetto. Kudos to you for showing your kids the world. My dad was in a wheelchair long before the ADA. It was very limiting. We’ve encountered that museums do not charge for the disabled person and their caregiver. Oftentimes you get to skip the line also. Enjoy your trip.

Thanks much for the feedback.

@Tim -- I like our location on the Zattere (lots of reasons specific to our family's needs, too long to go into here) and we can manage the vaportetto to bus transfer if we need to. So while I understand your recommendation to be closer to Santa Lucia, we'll keep our current reservation and work a little at the airport transfer. Thanks for your opinion on the boat access itself; sounds like the vaporetto/bus might be a better choice.

@jvb -- thanks so much for the additional information. I am investigating the links you provided and will use that information.

I appreciate your help!

I have taken a wheelchair on a vaporetto from the train station into Venice. The vaporettos are all wheelchair accessible with ramps. Also, staff are very helpful. The ticket office near the train station gives great assistance with which vaporetto to catch.

A separate, similar question from another poster reminded me that I never came back to this thread to post our experiences.

For our apartment to airport transfer, we wound up taking the Alilaguna. Although not the most scenic of rides, it was an easy and seamless transfer for my son. We were able to roll him right onto the boat at the Zattere stop and off again once we got to the airport. On the boat, he was able to easily walk down the 5 or 6 stairs to the seating area.

We purchased vaporetto passes for our 4 days in Venice and used them a LOT. This was a great way to get around for my son versus dealing with a lot of bridges (we still walked a ton, but we could strategically minimize the number of bridge crossings). Getting him on and off the vaporettos was easy, and the staff manning the vaporettos always helped with getting the stroller on/off if there were a step between boat and dock. We saw plenty of unaccompanied folks in wheelchairs using the vaporettos during our stay; boat staff always provided immediate assistance if needed.

Hope this helps anyone with similar circumstances who might be planning a trip to Venice. We found the people there to be incredibly helpful and respectful of my son’s needs and wouldn’t hesitate to bring him back (I’m already trying to scheme our next trip).
