Question about train from Monterosso to Varenna

I will be traveling from Monterosso to Varenna and I am having trouble pulling up any train routes on the Trenitalia web site or the German DB Bahn web site. It would probably help if I knew the exact names of the train stations in those towns. I know that Varenna is Varenna-Esino but there are a few options for Monterosso none of which yielded a train schedule. I was told that I would probably need to take the local CT train from Monterosso to La Spezia but even when I try to find a train timetable from La Spezia to Varenna-Esino...still no luck! Again, there are several different options for the La Spezia stations (La Spezia Centrale, La Spezia main station, etc.). Can anyone please tell me the proper names for the train stations that I would need to use and also whether I need to go to La Spezia first in order to get to Varenna. Thanks so much for your help.

I just looked at Trenitalia's site and came up with multiple postings. Trip is about 4 1/2 hours and you seem to change in Milano. I just typed in Monterosso and typed in Varenna. You don't need the train station name.

When I try the trenitalia web site, it says "no solution found". Not sure why it's not working for me. I must be doing something wrong. I've pulled up timetables in the past and never had a problem. I'll keep trying.

Sheron, CLICK HERE to see the morning schedule to Varenna from Monterosso. Times and fares are shown.

By the way, you may need to type in La Spezia Centrale AND Varenna-Esino. On the English page, I just typed in Monterosso and Varenna. It came up fine as long as you don't ask for a date beyond 6/12. As Tim notes, the schedules haven't been updated yet.

Sheron,

The problem is that new timetables will go into effect throughout Europe on 14 June and Trenitalia is notoriously slow in loading them. The DB site cannot load Italian timetables until Trenitalia has updated its site. Enter a date between today and 13 June for the same day of the week that you will be traveling and you'll get complete timetables. The new ones should be virtually identical to the present ones.

Do not go to La Spezia as you are backtracking. Take an intercity (non-stop) train from Monterosso directly to Milano Centrale which takes 3 hours, i.e. departs Monterosso 6:55 and arrives Milan 9:55 or departs 10:55 and arrives 13:55. Once you get to Milano Centrale the trains go every two hours to Varenna and the trip takes 1 hour and 3 minutes.

Thanks everyone for your help with this. I was finally able to pull up the timetable. Tim was right...I was trying to pull up a timetable for August and I guess it hasn't loaded yet. Thanks so much for all of your assistance.
