I've been Googling information but am unclear -- is there a high speed train on this route between Rome and Forte dei Marmi? I want to make sure I look for info from the actual train websites. What are the train sites: Trenitalia and what else?
Elsewhere I've read that it's not necessary to book the train in advance, that it can be done when we get to the train station? Agree?

Are you going on arrival or after time in Rome? If from Rome, I would book early to get a better fare. If on arrivla, wait in case your plane is delayed.
You can check Italotren too.
It will likely be a fast train to Florence but then a change to a regional train.

If you take a train through the coast, you'll save money, and may not be that much longer. Look at Intercity train (IC) option rather than the Frecciarossa via Florence.
