Hi, We heard that highway S222 has beautiful views. However, we wanted to see San Gimignano, then head to Volterra, Italy then head to our hotel near siena. Would we be traveling at all on the S222. Is there another name for this road? Thanks!
State Road 222 is the famous Chianti Road, la Chiantigiana in Italian. Just Google "Chianti road" and you'll find lots of information about it. It runs from Florence to Siena, but not near San G or Volterra.
Colleen,
We stayed in San Gimignano for one week during the Christmas holiday. By far, my favorite town. so quaint and cute. We stayed at Hotel Antico Pozzo. Elizabetta is a perfect hostess. If I could find a way to move there...perfecto! There are many wineries along the road to and from San Gimignao towards Volterra. We did Volterra as a day trip from San G. There is a great photographer in San Gimignao, her produces beautiful books.
as Tom stated 222 is also called "Chianti Road" it would be a good idea for you to get a good map of the area to help plan your route
Florence to Siena on 222 is a nice scenic route with some good places to stop along the way
To get to San Gim, you can go west out of Florence past Empoli and south on SR 429 to Certraldo. Turn right and it's about 5 1/2 miles to San Gim. Or, you can go down the Chianti Road to Poggibonsi, and turn west to get to San Gim. San Gim and Volterra is a great one day trip, starting first at Volterra. You would do best to get to San Gim late in the afternoon after the buses and tourists have left town. You can look any directions in Italy on Mapquest, and get detailed directions and mileage.
