Question about booking train tickets in Italy

I’m using the TrainItalia app to book my tickets and I noticed that there are some seats facing each other without a table, but have a suitcase image. Does this mean there is room for a larger case or something else?

Thanks!

No room for luggage there, but we always find a place to put it, often behind the last row of seats if the racks are full.

Hello Mariam,

I believe those are just the icons to show you where the baggage storage is on each car in the same way that they show you where the bathrooms are. The baggage storage area is open for general usage and doesn't get booked with a specific seat or anything like that. I believe the only spots like that are designated as seats with storage are those that have baby stroller spaces next to them and some special seats for people with mobility issues.

The seats in faster trains - the kind where you would be choosing your seat - also come with generous overhead storage above the seats which are are large enough for carry-on sized bags so baggage storage is generally only used for really large bags. The smaller, slower regionale trains don't have assigned seats and they have smaller overhead space large enough only for a backpack but larger luggage can go between the seats that are back-to-back.

You may already be familiar but the Man in seat 61 website is super helpful for many things train related:

It sounds like you're using the phone app which is really helpful for use in Italy because it lets you by tickets and track trains in real time. While in the states the web site is actually pretty good too and then English support is much better than it used to be.

Have a great trip!

Are you booking a seat in a Premium car? Those often run half empty, finding a place for your luggage shouldn't be a problem.

This is in 2nd class. On our last train from Rome
to Pisa, we had one of our seats at the back of the car, where the single seat is, so our oversized bag just sat with one of us. But I’m booking the next part of our trip and I was looking as the seating chart a bit closer and was wondering what the icon meant since the luggage icon was in between facing seats and didn’t mention what it was for.

I wish I could share a screenshot.

... I wish I could share a screenshot.

I can: https://i.postimg.cc/cJ1sTjQg/Immagine-2023-01-02-120431.png

Is it similar to what you have seen? If so, Note that seats 11D & 12D and 11A & 12A are not facing.

That's an IC train running tomorrow between Milan and Bologna, I wouldn't seat in front of a shared storage area. It would be like seating next to the kitchen's swing doors in a restaurant.

Yes! That is exactly what I was looking at.

Thanks for the confirmation. I thought it might be, but I didn’t look closely when we on the train last.

I booked the same arrangement we had last time, at least for part of the trip. The other part is on a regional train and I’m a bit concerned.

Mariam, Regionale trains do not have assigned/reserved seating. Could you elaborate what your concern is?

In most coaches where you have seats that back up to one another that there is enough room between/under them to stow a mid-sized roller bag.

I think your concern is for the size of the luggage? Just how big is the big chap?
