Purses?

Are purses allowed in museums? I had read packpacks were not. Is that correct?

Different rules for different museums. Probably would be best to check the museum you want to visit. You are correct that backpacks are not allowed in many museums.

Hi Ina,

For most places, purses are allowed. I would try to stick with no more than 14." I had no trouble using my tote/satchel/purse. If possible, use a cross body or a purse that can convert to a cross body when needed. Do not hang it on the back of a chair or place it on a table.

The Vatican and St. Peter's will allow that size. I did see smallish backpacks allowed by security. It also depends on time of year and crowds.

The Pantheon allows purses and backpacks. I traveled in December so that may make a difference in some places. School kids were there one day with backpacks as well as other travelers.

Borghese Gallery does not allow any purse of any size. Wear a money belt under your clothing to secure your money, credit cards, PP (if you carry it), and phone. Don't bring a bag on that day if you visit.
