Purchasing Wine to Bring Back

Hi,

My wife, daughter and I are traveling to Italy for 12 days and I want some help picking up wine to bring back.
Our Itinerary : -

Land in Naples on Sept 21 early am.
Drive down to Taormina and stay 4 days there of which 2 days will be part of a wedding.
Fly from Catania - Rome (Vueling with their 1 free bag policy) on Sept 25
Spend 4 days in Rome till Sept 30
Train from Rome to Naples to Sorrento
Stay a night in sorrento on Sept 30
Go to Positano On Oct 1st am
Head to Naples on Oct 1st early evening.
Leave Naples on Oct 2 early am to head back to Philadelphia

I'd like to purchase some wine while I am in Italy. Ideally, I'd like to purchase it in Rome/Sorrento/Naples so that we dont have to lug it on the Vueling flight from Catania. Do you have any suggestions for stores that would let me buy some barolos/ Brunellos that i cannot get at a comparable price point in the US?

Thanks,

Sanketh

Sicily has some great wines, too. I have had bottles shipped, very safe for the wine but not cheap.

Rome has many enoteca shops where you can sample some at tastings, or order by the glass. Can't think of any specifically, I buy wines in the region where they are produced (wider selection).

Laurel may have suggestions for Rome, she lives there.

we went to Roscioli in Rome for a wine tasting....which was hugely informative and also delicious. We went back the next day and bought a case of wine, which they shipped back to the US for us at a cost we thought was amazingly inexpensive. The wines were all really well priced, all things we could not get at home and included some Brunellos. Their sommelier, Alessandro Pepe, is knowledgeable and sensible and not at all pretentious (although I suspect he has ever right to be pretentious)

Trimani on via Goito, near Stazione Termini, has wines from all over Italy. Prices are not bad (they seldom are in stores). I have no idea if they ship although I know they deliver locally. The recommendation for Roscioli sounds like a winner, though. Make sure shipping wine to PA is legal under your state laws. Some states don't allow it.

I'm just wondering why you would rent a car in Naples to take the long trip to Catania/Taormina. Alitalia has very reasonable prices and lots of flights a day, and more generous luggage allowances.

Taormina can be a problem with a car. I've spent weeks there, and wouldn't want one, myself. There's a nice winery pretty close to Taormina, Gambino Vini, which is very close to Mt. Etna. They can ship wines to you in the U.S. as long as it's legal in your state. The trip to Mt. Etna/Gambino Vini would be a fun day-trip as an addition to your beautifully situated wedding (Taormina is spectacular, especially for weddings!) There are a lot of tours to Mt. Etna offered from Taormina, and I've used: legendofsicily.com several times and they combine the Mt. Etna and Gambino Vini into a whole day trip if you're interested. Gambino Vini has a facebook page if you'd like to look, as well as a website: gambinovini.com

Our hotel owner in Taormina let us use his pass to park in the Lumbi Parking Garage.
