We are trying to purchase our Train tickets from Vernazza to Venice for our October trip. Initially the time/route we wanted showed that it was sold out but now it appears it is available so we want to secure the tickets before hand. We went to the Trenitalia site but we are unable to purchase the tickets. It keeps directing us to "log in" or if not registered to register. It appears the registrastion is for the CarteFreccia card which you have to be an Italian citizen to obtain. We are caught in a big loop! Can't purchase the tickets till we register and cannnot register because we are not Italian citizens???? Has anyone been successful in purchasing tickets online?

I did that route but opposite in the past. You can buy high speed train tickets online as a guest. You need to be registered to get ragionale tickets which us citizens can't do now. The route will most likely be a regional train from vernazza to LA Spezia that perhaps a regional train to Florence or Milan and then the high speed train from there. Buy the ticket online for the time you want from say Florence to Venice. That ticket you can buy now and save money. Write down the other portion of the train route that trenitakia shows you on the site and buy those tickets in Italy

Aw..that makes sense. I need to double check but I thought the train that was showing sold out was a interRegio, which I am assuming is not a regional. Thank you so very much for the tip.

It is extremely rare for a train to sell out. When you get a message, Travel Soultion not sellable, it does not mean that it is sold out. It generally means that you cannot reserve, buy a ticket at this time most likely because you are too earlier or it is Regionale ticket. Since tickets became available later, I am sure that was the case.
I did a quick check. It is mostly Regionale trains. I didn't see your reference to InterRegio. Not sure what that is. I did see Regionale Veloco which is simply a slightly faster Regionale train but it is still a non reservation Regionale train. If you purchase a routing which includes a high speed train (with several did) with changes to a Regionale train the Regionale ticket (prevalidated) will be included. However, single Regionale trains tickets should not be purchased via the internet. Simply buy at the station.
