Purchasing train tickets for Italian destinations

My niece is going on her honeymoon to Venice, Rome, and Florence. Can they buy train ticket for both legs of the journey: Venice to Rome and Rome to Florence while at the Venice train station. Or do they have to buy at Venice and then at Rome? Since they leave in only1 1/2 weeks... is it still possible to do a transaction over the internet and immediately be able to print off a ticket instead of having to wait to get to Italy to start the purchase? Thank you!

Mary Ellen, there's still time to buy the tickets online through the Trenitalia website - read this post: Booking on the Trenitalia Website. You won't need to print out tickets as you can go ticketless on these faster trains - read this for some help: Going "Ticketless" and Using PNR Codes on Trenitalia. If they want to wait, then yes, they can use the kisoks ( Buying a Train Ticket- Updated) or head to a counter and buy ALL their tickets at one time, at one station!

Mary Ellen, Could you clarify why they're traveling that particular route? It would be easier to travel from Venice to Florence and then Florence to Rome. Especially at this time of year, I wouldn't be too concerned about buying tickets online. My suggestion would be to simply buy them at the stations in Italy, either at the staffed ticket windows or from the Kiosks, preferably a day or so prior to travel. She can buy all tickets needed for the trip at the first station she visits. However, one point to keep in mind is that some of the trains she'll be using will have reserved seating, which means she'll be "locked into" using a particular train and departure time. If your niece hasn't travelled by train in Italy before, be sure to remind her of the need to validate tickets on Regional trains. Failure to do so will result in expensive fines on the spot, which won't be a pleasant memory of her honeymoon. I'd also suggest they pack along a copy of the Italy Guidebook. You might want to have a look at the excellent roninrome.com website, as there's lots of information there. Cheers!
