Can I download train tickets and print from home? If not, how do I receive them? I have made reservations, and leave for Europe next Friday (6/12). I live in USA.
jane,
It would help to know whether you've already purchased train tickets, and which routes you'll be travelling? As you're leaving next week, I'm not sure there will be any advantage in pre-purchasing tickets as it's likely that only Base fare tickets will be left. You can just as easily purchase when you arrive there.
It will be easier to make specific suggestions with more information.
Thank you, Ken.
I was hesitant to purchase them since we are leaving next week, and I did not think they could be sent via post. As it turns out, I was able to print the first segment, and was given codes for the remainder. I appreciate your response.

We have been traveling Italy for a couple of weeks and have been purchasing train tickets as we go. When we arrive at a destination we usually purchase our outbound tickets for a couple of days later. It has worked well and we haven't had a problem with trains being sold out in 2nd class.
Mrtyday. Buying as you go is fine but it can be much more costly. You catch 5-6 high speed trains with a family of 4 and the financial benefits of buying supeconomy tickets well in advance are significant.
If you have an account with Trenitalia and logged into it to make your purchases, sign back in and there should be pdf copies of all of your recent ticket purchases available in your account. I always sign in to make my purchases so that I have that resource as a backup just in case the e-mail doesn't arrive (although that hasn't happened).
If you travel with a smart phone, you can also have tickets sent to your smart phone, in which case you just show that image to the conductor (no paper copy needed). Think you may need to do that during the purchase process though.
Whether a ticket is sold online in ticketless (you only need the PNR code, not a printed copy), print at home (PDF file), or pick up at station format can depend on the route and type of train, as well as the sales agent/web site. It's important to read the fine print in any shopping cart as you go through the purchase. For instance, an international ticket from a neighbor country to Italy can purchased through trenitalia.com but usually has to be picked up in an Italian train station.
