Purchase or rental of cell phone to use while in Italy

I do not know how to go about renting or buying a cell phone to use while we are in Italy. Any suggestions will be appreciated!

Ruth, To begin with, it would help to know if you have a Cell phone at home, and which network you're with? Also, what are you planning to use it for - local calls, mostly text messaging, calls back to the U.S.??? I would NOT recommend renting a Cell phone, as that's generally a very expensive option! There are a few choices you could consider: > Purchase an inexpensive PAYG phone when you arrive in Italy. You won't have any trouble finding a Cell shop, as they're all over the place! You'll probably need some help setting-up the phone, as the menus will be in Italian. Make sure you're clear on the method for "topping up". > Purchase a phone from one of the "travel phone" firms such as Cellular Abroad, Roam Simple, Call In Europe, Telestial or Mobal (there are others). These typically use a U.K. phone number and have consistent rates throughout western Europe, and billing usually post-paid (charged to a credit card). I've used one of those for the last few years and it's worked well. > If you don't already have one, purchase an unlocked, quad-band, GSM phone from E-Bay or other sites. Use that either with a SIM card bought in Italy or a SIM from one of the travel phone firms mentioned above. > If you currently have service with either AT&T or T-Mobile and your handset is compatible, simply using "roaming" with your home network. If you're only going to be making occasional calls, that's generally the simplest solution. If you have service with Verizon or Sprint, check with them for options. Verizon can provide a "travel phone" for periods up to 30-days, which is linked with your home number. Again, for occasional calls that would be something to consider. You'll have to decide which of those options will best fit your circumstances. Happy travels!
