I'm heading to Siena for the Palio (July 1-3) and would like to get there and back by bus from Florence. Is there a way to buy tickets online in advance? I can't seem to find one and all the advice is to purchase the day of in person. I just imagine that these buses are going to be very busy and potentially sold out. Any ideas?

Bus tickets can be purchased on the tabnet app, but they won't be bus-specific. The ticket won't include a seat reservation on a specific bus.
I doubt they will be sold out, if it happens walk for 400 meters to SM Novella station and take the first Regional train to Siena, once there follow the crowds to the public escalators.

I tried downloading the Tabnet app, but it wouldn't let me register. An issue with my phone number I think. I guess the only way to get a reserved seat would be on the train. May just do that. I'm traveling with two families & four kids, so just feel better about having a spot reserved.

I doubt there are frequent (or any) trains with reserved seats between Florence and Siena. Nobody would use them.
Anyway, you can check by yourself on www.trenitalia.com/en.html picking a day of travel before June 11. Trains marked R and RV are open-seating locals without Bookable seats.
