Puglia trip - Bari

In my upcoming trip to the Puglia region, my first stop will be Bari, which I plan to set up as a sort of home base for several days, taking day trips to some of the nearby towns. I've heard Bari has some "sketchy" parts of town. Can anyone recommend a good area to look for places to stay? (Or, an area to avoid?) As I'll be using public transportation, I'm hoping to stay somewhere that would be convenient to trains and buses.

It's a 10-15 minute walk from the train station to the old town, which is where I would wish to stay. I have stayed in small b&bs in old town twice--La Maison del Borgo Antico and Le Nicchie (liked the latter better because of its roof deck, both are quite small but pleasant).
I was not solo so cannot advise on safety, but what time of year will it be? If in spring or summer when it's light out late, I would not have qualms about walking from the train station to old town, certainly not about walking within old town.

I agree with staying in Bari’s Old Town if you want to stay in Bari. . Actually I recommend staying in Polignano a Mare and taking a train to Bari for the day.

We stayed in between the train station and the old town which was fine, and convenient for day trips by train, but if I return I will stay in the old town. It’s got a great vibe.
