Puglia or Amalfi coast after visiting tuscany

Wanting to visit Puglia after staying in Tuscany for five days but I feel we may need to rent a car to explore Puglia, train to Naples then
Amalfi Coast may be easier and no car needed? Any suggestions? Thank you.

Puglia is a very large region 2/3 the size of Vancouver island. The Amalfi coast is an area not even 1/3 the size of Edmonton. With only 5 days at my disposal and without a car I would probably leave Puglia for another time. It’s also considerably farther to reach than the Amalfi Coast.

Thank you, I think after staying in the Tuscan region we may take a train (have to see where we can leave from) and head to Naples, then Sorrento and Amalfi coast. I think you correct may be easier without a car.

It depends where in Tuscany you are. From Florence there are high speed trains to Naples. However a car may be needed for Tuscany as well depending on what you want to visit.

  • Toscana can be done using busses only. My wife and I did it way back in 2002, when we were on a very limited budget but going to Puglia definitely requires a car and at least two weeks. You haven’t stated how long your vacation in Italy will be in total.

I just came back from Puglia region--3 weeks before heading to Naples. All by public transport and out of season in November. Can be done and was fairly easy.

Every town in Italy is served by some form of public transportation, road or rail. So it is definitely possible to go anywhere without a car. The issue is efficiency. Some more rural destinations, although reachable by a combination of train and buses, are more efficiently visited with a private car. So it is not a matter of what is possible, but it is a matter of what is more efficiently accomplished in a limited amount of time.

Debra, I can’t tell from your post how much time you’re planning for the Amalfi/Puglia option of your trip. If it’s less than 10 days, I would go to Amalfi & save Puglia for a future trip.
