I've read about how major a problem mosquitos can been in Italy.
(My experience in Rome five years ago was they were only a minor nuisance.)
I'm curious, in Puglia, which months might be the worse for mosquito problems.

Not a direct answer, but I always pack Off Deep Woods individual wipes when I travel. That way, if I get an insect "surprise", I simply open a towelette and apply. Weighs almost nothing and takes up the same amount of space.
Gosh Im not sure Ive ever had an issue with mosquitos anywhere in Italy... at least nothing memorable. Maybe because in Texas we have so many? But specifically we were in the Puglia region last July for 2 weeks and we didnt have issues with any type of bugs at all. I was in Rome and Tuscany just last week as well...nothing.
We had lots of problems with the bugs in Venice one April, as the windows have no screens, and the hotel wouldn't turn on the air conditioning until a pre-determined date.
We have never had problems with insects in Italy either. We spent ten days in Puglia in early October. European hotels and homes, apartments do not often have screens.
We just returned from Italy and I got a few bites, but I tend to be a mosquito magnet. I carry the same wipes that Carol mentioned and they have saved me many a time. We are also careful about open windows and lights when it gets dark, since there are often no screens.
The wipes are a great tip. We've rarely had mosquito problem in Italy, but when we did it was an unpredictable torment. The breeding conditions are too localized to say a particular city or region has a mosquito problem. Our worst experience was on the 9th floor of a modern hotel in a city near the French border. We assumed the height was protective and went to dinner leaving the lights on and windows open. One way to learn the phrase 'notte bianca'.
My partner is a mosquito magnet (must be his Saskatchewan blood) and has had challenges with bites in Milan and Florence. Last week the Parisian mosquitoes found him. He uses repellant and anti itch cream as needed.
Had an episode with Mosquitos in Florence a few years ago. No screens on windows and on the ground floor. But I tend to be a magnet so don't know. Didn't know about the wipes then. Will carry them if/when I go again.
