Looking for accommodation recommendations for our upcoming trip to the following stops in Puglia:
Polignano al Mare, Otranto, Locorotondo/Martina France/Cisterna area - would love to stay in a trullo, and Matera, would love to stay in a cave accommodation. We will have a car. My husband and I love quaint B&B's in beautiful surroundings, preferably with a pool when possible, since it will be hot when we are there, and within walking distance to at least a couple of restaurants so we don't have to drive after our wine. Thank you in advance - we have gleaned many great places to stay over the years from this forum.
In Matera we stayed at Locanda di San Martino; request a cave room - you'll love it. Also, they have a cave pool "spa" (extra cost of 10 euros, I think, but well worth it) - I believe you can book a time, as they limit numbers; it will be one of the most memorable things you can do. Since you have a car, be sure to stop at Cripta del Peccato on your way in to Matera; book in advance for a tour of cave paintings uncovered in the 60's on private property (also a winery!). This place is just incredible - not to be missed. You'll feel like Indiana Jones on the walk in...
Near Ostuni/Locorotondo we stayed at Masseria Cervarolo; it's pricey, but an absolutely lovely place with a pool in a gorgeous setting. They have a restaurant with wonderful food and wine (even a free wine-tastiing on Thursday nights) and walking to dinner is very atmospheric.
In Alberobello we stayed in a 2 bedroom trullo La Rosa dei Trulli outside of town. It was picturesque with an outdoor eating area, but the owner has many cats and they have free run of the place; for that reason, I wouldn't recommend it for more than a night.
I would base in Lecce instead of Otranto. Rather than stay in town, we opted for a rather futuristic place just off the highway, 8piuhotel. It was easy for daytrips with a car and a short walk on a tree-lined street to the town (historic district - no cars). The town itself is beautiful with lots to see, much nicer than Otrano.
Another Masseria to consider near Locorotondo is Masseria Aprile, a working farm with trolling rooms as well as apartments with kitchen facilities. No swimming pool or on-site restaurant for dinner, but they do serve breakfast in the farmhouse and offer tastings of their products.
I thoroughly second the recommendation of Masseria Aprile and staying in one of its trulli --- just a lovely place and people.
In Matera, we enjoyed the cave rooms of the B&B La Corte dei Pastori --- you can park right below and there are excellent views from the terraces where you eat breakfast.
We were not enchanted with Polignano a Mare, seemed very tourist-oriented even in April, much preferred Trani as a seaside town.
