Looking to spend two weeks in Puglia and Basilicata in September. Its shoulder season - are the sights, restaurants, hotels, etc still open or are things beginning to shut down for the year? Anyone been there at that time of the year recently?
I'd be very surprised if things are closed then. It's still swimming weather (i.e., pretty warm).
It's a good idea to check weather data for multiple years; I like to look at five. Use the pull-down box at the right, just above the map, to change the month and year displayed. Use the Search box at the upper right to change the location.
We were in Puglia last Sept and everything was open. Also, it was still on the warm side (first half of Sept)
September isn’t shoulder season in southern Italy. Heck even November has good weather down there. The water will still be very warm, hotels will be open, and there will still be tourists around. Heck, my first trip to Sardinia almost 25 years ago was in October and we swam even then.
September in Puglia can be called shoulder season only if you mean that you will be shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of tourists around you. It won’t be as sardine packed like August, but not far from it. The beginning of the month will actually be very packed at least till Italian schools start around September 15.
We've been to Puglia every September/October for the last few years usually arriving mid-September by which time things are quietening down. Some beach facilities in small villages on the coast which just cater to tourists may start closing from mid-September, it depends on the destination. And the Gargano peninsula and places like Vieste are winding up the season by 15th/20th September. Everywhere else everything will be open as normal.
Ciao..ck out Maratea in Basilicata! Stayed there last July for 5 nights..beautiful blue warm water...amazing. it's the only part of Basilicata on the sea..pm me if you have questions..
