Puglia Guide/Driver

One thing that this forum has taught me over 15 years here is the craft of doing it yourself. Either directly through posts/responses or via a suggested link, I've pretty much been able to achieve my goal of self-sufficient travel. You guys are the best at allowing us to do our own thang.

But in the sometimes-exhausting role of de facto tour guide--even if it's only wife & myself, I have come to realize that, at various points in a trip with multiple destinations, it is nothing short of a wonderful feeling to hand the car keys (i.e. decision-making) off to a good guide for awhile. This practice worked famously on our trip last April, from a wonderful day in Chianti with the Accidental Tourist folks, to a fledgling driver husband and guide wife that carted four of us around the Amalfi Coast on a day that was approaching gridlock for normal mortals, to my friends at Sicily Life that took us up the winding roads of Etna amongst the banging & booming of an active volcano. All of them memories to last a lifetime.

So that is why I'm starting early to secure a guide/driver for our next trip in March 2027, that will begin with a chill couple of weeks in Rome, then via Trenitalia to Puglia, where we haven't yet been in four previous trips to Italy. I'm thinking a week basing in Lecce, taking the train ourselves during the day to Bari & back, stopping occasionally along the way to check out places like Brindisi, Monopoli, Polignano a Mare, and grooving in Lecce's Old Town in the evenings.

But one day I'd like to hire someone local, preferably personally-recommended, to take us inland, maybe to Ostuni, Alberobello and finally Manduria, where a few years ago my brother witnessed a tree planted in my father's honor because his Air Force squadron based there in WWII--he told me the Mandurians are forever grateful for my dad's service. Can't miss that. And I'd like that guide to possess the kind of inside knowledge that only a resident would have.

I know a private tour like this isn't cheap, but in my travels even though I've always been value-driven, as I think most of us on this forum are, I certainly don't mind paying for quality. Chime in with any personal recounts of travels in the vicinity and/or experiences with worthwhile guides. Thanks!

I might be able point you in a good direction (might!) but would need to know a few things:

  1. Are you absolutely set against renting a car?
  2. Do you want a drive AND a guide, or a driver only? (I think the latter is fine)
  3. Do you speak basic Italian (not a big issue of the answer is "no.")
  4. Would you consider an overnight in Manduria? Or using that town as a base for a portion of your trip?
  5. Are you interested in wine?
  6. Is Taranto of any interest?

I do not like the idea of basing in Lecce and visiting Bari, etc for the day.
Ostuni has a train station, although it is out of the town; it's pretty close to Manduria.

I've been to Puglia about 5/6 times and will take our next trip ior two weeks n May,, so I am familiar with a good bit of the region, but by no means all of it. We've always rented a car but have used the occasional driver. I have never been to Manduria.

The stickler here is to find someone who will know the WW2 history of Manduria since those who were actually there will be elderly and not likely to be guiding, but could be probably be scoped out once you are in the town and have a connection made in advance of your trip. That's why I think that to do this justice you might want to have at least one overnight in the town

Excellent, ek...you've got game!

Let's address the numbered points first:

  1. Yes, I don't drive in Italy.
  2. Combo driver & guide
  3. Not even basic Italian, just a few words and phrases.
  4. My brother & wife stayed in/near Manduria, found it charming. So no, I'm not against possibly staying a night there. My brother still has contacts there so I'm not quite as concerned historically, as someone who can facilitate us getting there & can translate at times. I'm planning on my brother helping set up a designated meeting with the Mandurian folks at the tree grove.
  5. Not really interested in wine, although we'll drink a glass here & there.
  6. And no, I'm not against visiting Taranto either, as that was the main AFB that Dad flew out of in 1944-45.

My reasons for Lecce--everyone I've spoken with that have been to Puglia have always said about Lecce...'I wish we had spent more time there'. In addition, I'm eyeing a really neat AirBnB on the ground floor of a stone building that is equidistant between Lecce's train station and Old Town, totally walkable. And I just like the idea setting up shop somewhere, doing the daytrips then coming back in the late afternoon for a nap, then walk to dinner at a local joint. I've made this practice work at Campo de' Fiori in Rome on two separate trips and we really like it.

So no, we wouldn't be taking the train to Bari every day...I just thought we'd do Monopoli one day, Polignano a Mare another, although I haven't yet checked the logistics on how far these towns are from the train station, but even if not I'm sure there are local taxis about. But our final day, we will want to be driven to the Bari airport for our flight home, or wherever we go next (also up for discussion at another time!).

So great you're going there in May. I'm not planning on cementing down plans until at least June anyway, so any recon you do will be of great help. Question...where would you stay on a trip of our type? We're around 70, ambulatory but not hikers by any means. Walking is fine to get our steps in!
