Puglia - Bari trip - where to stay?

Hi all,

My husband and I are traveling to Bari in January 2022 for 2 1/2 weeks. We're scouting the town - we plan on retiring in a few years and Bari is a place we're considering to live in about 6months out of the year. We want to stay in a part of town that is safe, close to public transporation but also in a local neighborhood (not touristy). Does anyone have any recommendations on which websites we can search on to find a good place to rent - be it an appartment or small house? Also, any recommendations on which part of town would be a good place to stay in? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

If I had to retire in Italy I'd pick a rich region with less crime and more money to finance the health care system. Even if Polignano's summer ER center took care of my bones a couple of times when I was a child with a scooter and too much free time.

For just 2 1/2 weeks you can stay in the old central district of Bari or close to it.

The old district of Bari is atmospheric and charming. I have stayed in small B&Bs there a couple times, and there were small windy staircases, small bathrooms. My husband and I are both small, and we could barely turn in the shower. Bari is good because it is on the train line, but so is Monopoli, a gorgeous little town just to the south. I can see the appeal of Bari in that is more of a town and not a small village, plus the transport links. Bari used to have a bad reputation, but I think that's out of date--we felt perfectly comfortable in the old town and in the area around the train station.
I rented a great apartment in Monopoli from this agency, and they do sales as well. Hopefully this is helpful just to see what kinds of things are available.
