Planning a trip to this region in Sept. 2020, only spending 4 nights and 3 1/2 days in the area. Any recommendations for a base? I've booked a few places in Locorotondo which seems like a good area to see the sites with out a lot of driving.

With a car, Locorotondo makes an excellent base. Not to mention it's a beautiful village.
Most towns and villages are within 30-45 minutes. Bari, Matera and Lecce just over an hour.
Yes, loved Locorotondo.
Make sure you visit a town on the blue green Adriatic too, Polignano a Mar or Monopoli. They are on the train line.
