Public Travel in Rome

Hello, I was trying to understand how to use public transport in Rome. I would like to get one of the multiple day passes such as the CIS card since I plan on staying at least 7 days in Rome. My biggest concern is validating the card. I understand there is usually a machine in the bus, tram or at the metro that will validate the card on the first trip. What happens on subsequent trips? Do you scan the card, swipe it, or "ka-chunk" it in the machine again? Would that cause a second date and time to get printed on it and invalidate it? I tried to find a youtube video on how to use it, but most people only post using the ticket for 1.50 euros. Thank you for your help.

With a multi-trip ticket, even if it is just a day ticket, you validate it on the first trip then board subsequent buses and present the ticket if confronted by a fare checker. You still put it through the ticket machine on the Metro.

I have used the multi day passes many times. As Laurel described above, you only need to validate the first time you use on a tram or bus. We have been asked to show that the pass is valid on later trips, but not often. Personally, I think the multi day passes are great.

After I have validated it the first time I put it away. The only time that anybody needs to see it again is if it is checked.

This may be a reason that some tourists think that you don’t need a ticket on buses in Rome. Most people have a pass of some sort, certainly the residents, so you don’t see a lot of people waving tickets about.
