There are several buses that leave from Termini (#64 is one, I think #40 is another), check the ATAC website. If you get off at Largo Argentina, you will walk past some of the oldest buildings in Rome, dating from the Republic period. Take Via Arenula until you get to the Lungotevere, the Ghetto will be to your left. Take a tour of the Great Synagogue, have a Pizza Re David (King David Pizza) or something more authentic, stop at the 16 October 1943 piazza with a plaque in memory of the Roman Jews who were deported that day, and to the infants who died in the camps. Then just wander through the neighborhood. Trastevere is just across the bridge.

Hi John-while I have not been to Rome-yet-myself, I do see the issues with getting around a strange place! I found this Google map on Tripadvisor, and it looks pretty user friendly. There are sites, hotels, and restaurants highlighted. The Tripadvisor page for the Ghetto is also a good resource. It looks as though it's not too far from Stazione Termini to The Ghetto neighborhood-looks fascinating. Have a great trip, and, by the way, I just saw the film A Great Beauty (La Grande Bellezza) and it has some gorgeous shots of Rome, very enjoyable. I'll get there some day;-))
