I've spent a lot of time on Sicily's East Coast, and didn't need a car, but this time I'm landing in Palermo and want to end up in Taormina or Syracusia. Is there a train/bus that is at all worth using, or should we try to drive it?
We've done all of Sicily on public transportation and, especially for the larger locations like Taormina and Siracusa, it works quite well.
Drive. You can reach more off-the-beaten path spots and avoid the usually crap trains and the dangerous buses that run there.
Driveexcept in Palermo; do your Palermo siteseeing and then bus to the airport and pickup your car and drive. If going to Taormina, you MUST stop in Cefalu for a least a couple of days and climb the rock, lay back and become Sicilian for a while before driving to Taormina. We stayed on the beach in Naxos at the Hilton below Taormina and drove up see the sites; driving to Siracusa is easy and there is parking close to the Amplatheater, howver, we didn't get into the old city so cna't help there.
We've don Sicily twice in the last 3 years in March and it is beautiful and green and uncrowded and cheap!
Thank you Jerry! I am checking on Cefalu! I'm unable to "climb" but my husband and our friends can enjoy that particular experience!
