Has anyone been in Italy on either of these holidays? Do you know if cabs, subways, trains, etc. are still operating or if everything shuts down? I'll be in Florence on Christmas and Rome on New Year's eve/day. Thanks.
Hi Dani,
My friends and I are going to Italy for Christmas and New Year's this year (Rome for Christmas and Siena for New Year), and we searched far and wide for the answer to this question! This is an answer I found through a google search: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Italy-145/Rome-Christmas.htm
My friend found another answer from an Italy native that noted Italy's public transportation industry is very strictly regulated; in fact, they are prohibited from striking on the holidays! Of course they run on an abbreviated schedule on holidays, and it may be very difficult to find a cab. If you are arriving at or departing from these cities on the eve or the day of the holiday, I would suggest arranging for a hotel pick up from the train station or airport, as opposed to hoping you'll find a cab.
Hope this helps! Have a fabulous trip!

Tammy,
You should be lucky actually. On New years Eve, Rome's Metro actually works on an ever later schedule. As opposed to Christmas when in shuts down completely :(
