Public Transport from MUC to Ortisei

Thank you in advance for assistance with the following questions:

  1. If I plan to base my family in Ortisei for five days of hiking from Ortisei and Santa Cristina, do we need a car?

  2. If not, is the best route from MUC to Ortisei the S-bahn from MUC to Bolzano and then the bus or taxi from Bolzano to Ortisei?

  3. What are your thoughts on taking the S8 line from MUC to Ostbahnhof then taking the EuroCity train from Ostbahnhof to Waidbruck/Ponte Gardena, and then the bus or taxi to Ortisei?

  4. Does the Val Gardena guest pass provided by the hotel in Ortisei cover the bus from Bolzano to Ortisei? (Wondering if it's easier to take a taxi for three people from Bolzano to Ortisei.)

  5. Should I plan for five hours of travel from MUC to Ortisei?

Thank you!

We are going the opposite direction, but I booked our train tickets with Deutsche Bahn between Munich and Bressanone/Brixen. You can then either take the bus from there to Ortisei or book a taxi for about 100€. Our hotel in Ortisei recommended Taxi Mambo. https://www.taximambo.com/en/ If you’re basing yourself there, you don’t need a car. Hope this helps.

Should I plan for five hours of travel from MUC to Ortisei?

Yes, but the trains from Munich Ost to Waidbruck (with a change in Brixen) is only every 2 hours, so depending on when you land, there could be some extended wait time at Munich Ost.

Are you returning to Germany from Ortisei? Only then would I think about renting a car. Get an IDP if you decide on that.

The Val Gardena guest pass website states that you can receive a digital pass upon booking and use it on your arrival and departure days as well as during your stay. The digital option might be relatively new -- I was not aware of it 2 years ago and I paid for the trip to Ortisei..
