Public swimming pools in Sorrento?

White this will be our 7th trip to Italy, it will be the first with our eight year old niece. We've looked at a number of places in Sorrento for a place with a pool, but I was wondering if there are public swimming pools in Sorrento and if they would be open in mid May?

Thanks Roberto. We'll do a beach day but she's a big time pool girl LOL.

There is no public swimming pool in Sorrento itself. The one Roberto found is in the town of Piano di Sorrento and is some distance from the centre of Sorrento located on a camp ground. You could catch a local EAV bus. I would suggest you book a hotel with a pool. Their pools should be open in May but be aware that most pools are unheated and a lot of people find them too cold at that time of year. That being said children seem tougher, my brother's children when younger often swam in the North Sea (UK) at that time of year! And my cousin's children swam in the sea at Sorrento middle to end of April.

Thanks Linda, I've actually seen my niece turn BLUE and keep swimming LOL. I think we're going to have to go with a hotel with pool.

The swimming situation in Italy, especially Southern Italy, is a lot different from the US and most of the world. Cities build municipal swimming pools, then contract with a local competitive swim club to manage the pool and conduct the swimming lessons there. But you can't just show up at the door and pay a fee to swim in the pool, you have to purchase a membership. When the pool isn't occupied by a team workout or swimming lessons, "Nuoto livero" (free swimming) times are set aside - sometimes the pool memberships are valid only during specific hours of specific days of the week. So they do have municipal swimming pools, but they're not public pools in the way we think of public pools in the English speaking world. If your niece is a registered member of a swim club affiliated with USA Swimming (www.USASwimming.org), the local swim club will probably be delighted to invite her to join a workout, but otherwise, as another poster suggested, a hotel is the best bet. The best place to find pools of any sort is the Swimmers Guide website, which you shouldn't have much trouble finding. Good luck, Bill Haverland
