Public rest rooms in Venice

I was just looking at venice connect and see that they sell a daily toilet card for 2 Euros -- how do the public bathrooms work in Venice -- do you need to purchase the card or can you -- hate to say this -- pay as you go?

You can pay as you go (LOL) but then you always have to have change on hand. I remember paying 1.50 euro for the one near the Rialto Bridge. I think a card would be easier.

I bought the toilet cards our first trip to Venice and the facilities were never where we needed them, so when we left, I turned over all of the cards to our B&B host, who laughed becasue he realized how minimally useful they are. Use the restrooms in museums and churches, and if the need is urgent, stop for a coffee (1 Euro) or buy a bottle of water in a bar and use the toilet there.

Espresso has two purposes in Venice. They are great for that lovely coffee taste and flavour. They are also your ticket, for €1, to the bar's toilet. The toilets covered by the venice connect are never where you need them. When the need arises have a caffé. Bars are everywhere and most are quite passable in the little room at the back. And never, ever, leave a museum without "going" for free.

Did'nt know about the toilet card.....does it cover all the public ones or just at certain points? We usually do the cafe/aqua/gelato stop when the need arises but I would suggest avoiding doing this in the Piazza San Marco area.....an emergency stop a couple of weeks ago cost us 14 euro for a cappuccino and an espresso.

@Ron - The toilets covered by the card are few and far between. Even for P.za San Marco they are down by the Giardinetto. (I once ducked into a hotel to ask where the darn cards were useable and the concierge just waived me into their lobby facility.)

Restroom use was generally 1 Euro and staffed by an attendant. I wouldn't bother with a card.

What happens if someone is having an emergency and does not have a toilet card, change or near a restaurant, etc? Is there some kind of emergency option? Ruth

Ruth, carry the change. The emergency option is not a pretty sight.

Show me anywhere, I really mean anywhere, in any sestiere, where you are more than 100 metres from a bar. What is the emergency option in Concord? Or Boston?
