Protection from theft at beach

Probably a silly question, but... I'm traveling alone to CT on 9/28 and, weather permitting, am hoping to swim. I usually keep my passport, credit cards and cash in my money belt while out...what do I do with them if I go in swimming??? Should I leave them in my hostel dorm room?Ideas??

Beach security can be a problem. Obviously if the hostel has a safe or lockable storage, use it. Second you take a water proof neck bag and wear it.

If you go to a sports shop they should have the waterproof containers to wear on your neck. They have a slightly larger size that sailors use to keep their cigarettes dry. We've used them without a leak for our credit cards and a bit of cash. Hopefully there's a safe for your passport like Frank said

I don't rightly remember but I THINK Monterosso has the changing rooms you rent out and you can lock your things up in there.

This is when it might be worth it to pay to use a private beach. They can secure your valuables. I can't remember how much they cost, but it's worth asking once there. You can always identify the private beaches by the militarily precise rows of beach chairs.

Susan - Ron is correct. In Monterosso, there are changing rooms as well as a bank of lockers that you can use. It is a private beach so you'll have to pay for your table and chair for the day, but it is well worth the price. Also, if you are staying in town, many hotels have special discount offers for the beach. Be sure to ask at your hotel. [INVALID]catherine

Thanks all for the ideas. I went to CT last year at the same time and the water was still warm, but I just waded in because I couldn't figure out how to keep my stuff safe. I promised myself that I would try to really enjoy the water when I came back this year (weather permitting!). Thanks again..I can always depend on this site for answers!
