My family ( ages 43, 42, 9, 7 ) is planning a 3 week trip to Italy this August. We'd travel in the fall except for dreaded elementary school which seems to always put a damper on my travel dreams. Here's what I'm thinking: Venice for 5 nights. Florence for 4 nights. ( Perhaps we'd have lunch in Bologna along the way; I have a desire to see the porticos ever since reading Grisham's 'The Broker'. )
CT for 4 nights where we might head to Genoa one day to see the aquarium. Tuscany for 7 nights, stay in an agristurismo. See the Palio time trials in Siena. My kids are travel hardened having spent a month in Greece a few years ago. I originally wanted to do more places, but was informed by my wife that fewer stops would be better. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks
Hi Chris, your wife is right! I think your schedule is great and as you mentioned you can do day trips from your 4 bases. I am a big fan of longer stays and really enjoying a place (as I've said over and over again on this site!). I'll be taking my family, kids are 13 & 8, to Italy for three weeks in July (Rome 5 nights, Positano 7, CT 3, and Venice 8 nights) followed by England for two weeks. We too did a similar trip in 2009 to Spain/France.
