Proper attire for Opera in Rome

I am taking my wife, while we are in Italy in May, to see Pagliacci in Rome at the Teatro dell'Opera. My question is what should we wear (help from men & women would be appreciated)? It is not the opening night of the performance and it is scheduled for 8:30pm on a Tuesday if that helps. Thanks for your help.

Evan,

I used to have season opera tickets for the Fox in Atlanta for years and I always wore a tux or suit to the opera. Very different here. Most Italians dress up but there are MANY tourists in the crowd who do not. So it's very eclectric - and all across the board. Dress as you'll feel comfortable and you;ll be fine. We tend to dress up when we head to the opera, as we live here...

I've been to the Opera in several European countries and have seen everything from formal evening wear to blue jeans and t-shirts worn at each event. I always take one dressy outfit (but not formal) to wear for theatre, opera, ballet, dining out at a specal rest. etc. I even wear this outfit for the evening passeggiata as the Italians seem to really dress up for their evening stroll.
Buon viaggio!
