Problems registering with Trenitalia as a Non-Italian Citizen

I need to register with Trenitalia ( for several reasons).
I have searched on this website, and on the web, and no one seems to be having this problem.
I have been able to complete the whole registration page (using a hotel address in Italy), but when I try to complete the document identity section ( I am using my Canadian driver's license), it won't let me complete the issuing municipality. I have recompleted the registration page 3 times, and I still I can't put in the municipality ( there is no scroll down in that field), and when I submit, it says all mandatory information is necessary.
Does anyone have this problem?
Thanks.

Try using you passport as a document identity card.

I tried using my passport, I even had more difficulty with not being able to complete certain fields. Using my drivers license, I was able to complete everything except that one field. And I just tried to do a bit of a work around, I put in the issuing municipality as the same as my hotel address, it accepted that! But now it is not accepting my VAT/Tax code ( in Canada a common tax code is GST). So does anyone know what I should put in the tax code field?
thanks

Hi spearl. Some ideas:

  • use trainline web site instead.

  • if still looking for a tax code, search on this site for 'code fiscale' - there are recent threads on this site regarding what to use.

  • Dario's info from a post a few days ago:

"Foreigners can actually register on trenitalia.com sending an email to [email protected] and a pdf copy of a valid passport".

Good luck!

I used a different browser, and the problem that I now have registering, is you need a VAT/Tax code! ( issued only to Italian Citizens).
Any ideas??

If you can use the TrenItalia app as opposed to the website, it asks for a lot less information. It does, however, require your Codice Fiscale - your Italian tax ID number. I used this link to generate one. It’s not “official” but it works for the purpose of registering on the app. Just entering Canada for
place of birth (Stati Uniti if the USA) and you shouldn’t have a problem. If you need an address, enter your hotel location info if necessary.

The only way a foreigner can register has been explained above. Chat with trenitalia to see what to write in the email.

Out of curiosity, Did you turn chrome's auto-translate option off? You must turn it off and use the English version of the site.

Hi Bob

I have used trainline, but they told me in order to exchange tickets which I bought through them, I need to do it with Trenitalia.

I looked at 'code fiscale', its a huge process ... imagine trying to get a social security #, it's almost like that!
I sent an email to [email protected] and a pdf copy of my valid passport about a week ago, and they did not reply.

Thanks for your Good luck, but I think I give up!

Spearl, as you are asking for help would you mind reading the posts written to help you? A Codice Fiscale is not a social security number, it's just your name, surname place and date of birth changed into a code using a public/open algorithm.
The above site is very easy to use. I doubt you'll be able to register as trenitalia wants foreigner to send an email, but getting an italian tax code is very easy. You do not need a validated one as you are not going to use it to pay taxes in Italy.

Hi Dario,
I did read someone else's response before yours, who told me how to get an Italian tax code - that website was more complicated.
However, I did follow your link, and easily able to create an Italian tax code.

With the Italian tax code and with a few other workarounds on the form, I was finally able to register with Trenitalia!
Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions.

Worked like a champ.

Thanks Philip & Dario!

And as an added bonus, the app for iPhone is finally available in the US App Store!

I was excited to find this thread. I was successful at getting my Codice Fiscale. Downloaded the iPhone app and filled out the registration form in English. There was a problem with entering tax code until I deleted the spaces. When there were no more red fields, checked the "I have read and I accept" box. I tried to click the Continue button. But it's not activated. Sad.
