Problems booking with Trenitalia website and app - error 998

I have tried a number of times to book tickets on the Trenitalia app and on their website (using both Chrome and Firefox) but I get errors every time. When I tap the Pay button after checking the Credit Card payment type, I get a "Central system error" on the app, or an "Error Code: 998 The transaction has not been completed. No charge made" on the website. I am NOT logged in - I clicked "Continue Without Login" after selecting my train. I see there were several posts in past years where people ran into this same problem, and some answers referred to making sure your credit card company knows you are charging something overseas. But I get these messages before I even get to the screen to enter my credit card information.

I had no trouble - but next time try restarting your phone or computer and go into the site again. Also some debit cards wont work, depends on the bank, Some banks ask you to call before making online overseas purchases, so their fraud dept wont be alerted and you avoid freezing your card. Please know I found better prices on Italo Treno, my hotel suggested it and I was happy with the service - you should check it out.

Hi all instead of starting another thread...I am also having a problem booking as well for October. This is the message I get despite having entered everything they ask for

Enter the data required for purchase without registration: name, surname, email

Any ideas? I did not put in a phone number

Did you put your middle name in the first name field?
Did you turn chrome auto-translate off?

All of our card companies know we're going and it's still taken me three credit cards to book hotels, trains and sites...
