Problem with Car Rental & Intinerary

We are starting in Venice (2 nights), then Florence (2 nights), then Tuscany/Umbria(5 nights), then Rome (3 nights).

We had planned to pick up our car rental when we leave Florence, used it for the Hill Towns, etc., spend our last night in Tuscany at Orvieto where we can drop off our car before taking a train to Rome.....ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT WE NEED AN AUTOMATIC AND WE CAN'T RETURN AN AUTOMATIC IN ORVIETO!

What should we do? Drop car off back in Florence, taken train to Rome? Siena drop-off? Or should we just drive to Rome Airport to drop off?

Drop the car off in Florence, take the train to Orvieto for the night then the train into Rome the next morning.

What better way to learn to drive a stick shift than on the roads in Tuscany and Umbria with a rental car.

Bob we did nearly an identical itinerary to yours in late June and early July. We dropped our car at Rome, FCO airport on 7/6 and took a train from FCO into Termini, then a cab to our hotel. Worked well for us.

I don't understand why you can't drop an automatic in Orvieto. Picking one up I would understand.
